Masrya's journey to a better life
Egypt - At the Tolba facility in Abu Rawash, a young lioness stands in a little cage on the corner of a busy street. She looks bored in this cage that is so small that she can only lie, sit, or stand in there. The only thing that she can do the whole day, is to watch people passing by...
And there are many people passing by without paying the young lioness much attention.
Hundreds, probably thousands have been passing by since she had been put in that tiny cage, wondering what a lioness does in such a small cage on a busy street?
But no-one really cared!
But then, in July 2012, a young German lady passed there and spotted the young lioness in the small cage. She didn't need to wonder - she knew: this was not a life for such a beautiful creature who belongs in the wild.
Her name was Saskia Berndt. She was the one who did not just pass by, but decided to do something to help this poor creature! Saskia took pictures, took note of the exact location and reported her to Occupy for Animals.
Saskia later said, that she felt that she must do something to try to help the young lioness, but did actually not even dream that her action would really be the start to a new, better life for the young lioness.

Saskia later said, that she felt that she must do something to try to help the young lioness, but did actually not even dream that her action would really be the start to a new, better life for the young lioness.
When we (at OfA) received Saskia's email with the added pictures of the young lioness, the first thing we did was to consult with Dina Zulfikar, our Egyptian correspondent. Knowing how animals are being kept in the governmental zoos of Egypt, we did not want to contact the authorities and take the risk that the young lioness gets confiscated and sent to one of these zoos where her life would not be any better than at the moment, at the Tolba facility, without consulting Dina.
Dina is certainly one of the loudest voices for animals in her country and during the 6 years that she is working hard and tirelessly to improve the conditions in the governmental zoos of Egypt, she has come to know the Egyptian authorities better than anyone else... and Dina shared our fears regarding a confiscation of the young lioness.
The next day, Dina drove to Abu Rawash, to the Tolba facility, where she found the young lioness, exactly like Saskia had described.
There, Dina met Mr Tolba, the owner of the young lioness, who she later described as a very kind man. Dina learned that the young lioness was about 2 years old and has been kept as a pet since she was a little cub. Mr Tolba purchased her from a street trader who had been using her as a tourist photo prop, and to make sure that she would not hurt the tourists, the little lioness had been de-clawed by the street trader/photographer.
But soon the little lioness grew too big and too strong to be left to roam freely and at the age of 5 or 6 months she was put in that small cage where she remained ever since... After being used as a photo prop, she was now used to advertise a private animal collection, in a cage, on a busy street...
Dina immediately fell in love with the young lioness! She was very moved by the plight of this gentle creature and she promised her to do everything in her power to free her from her cage and her boring life.
Back at her computer, Dina informed the others in the group of what she had seen in Abu Rawash and told them about the gentle, little lioness. All agreed to do everything they possibly could to get the young lioness out of her cage, without taking the risk that she would be confiscated and put in one of the governmental zoos. They did not want her to have the same fate as beautiful, little Mimi, a cute lioness cub who was rescued from a life of misery into the arms of a loving 'mum', only to be taken away again and placed in one of the Egyptian zoos where she died a few weeks later.
No! This should not - never ever - happen again and they agreed to find another solution for the young lioness!
That day in early August 2012, was the beginning of a journey to a new, better life for the young lioness, who - from now on - carried the name 'Masrya'.
The team to save Masrya was in place and soon Spots & Stripes stepped in offering help to raise the needed funds, to do all the necessary paper works and to find a place for the young lioness.
Spots & Stripes contacted Stichting Leeuw in the Netherlands and when they offered Masrya a place at their sanctuary, the rescue operation could begin.
(Occupy for Animals ).
(Shelley Mattocks).
The journey to get Masrya to her new life

Masrya began her veterinary inspections yesterday, as you can see by the pictures of her in a cage for inspection.
Although a lack of real knowledge or awareness of a lion's needs is apparent, we are happy to report that Masrya's general condition is good and she is a very relaxed and placid young lady in her current environment. Masrya shows no fear or aggression towards either Mr Tolba or his son, they keep her in clean and tidy conditions, she has been well cared for to the best of their knowledge and abilities.
Masrya's overall health is good although she is slightly under nourished. Our vet has began a course of vitamin supplements along with and is advising Mr Tolba on a feeding regime that will help towards her improvement. Her condition will improve in earnest once she is comfortably settled at Stichting Leeuw.
Sadly, our vet has reported that Masrya has been de-clawed so the sooner she feels that grass under her feet the better...

Mixed news on progress for Masrya but all is going in the right direction although there have been some unforeseen hurdles over recent weeks to overcome.
1stly Masrya herself, despite all best efforts by both Dina and Omar, Masrya's move to a larger enclosure was short lived. Masrya is back in the cage spending much time outside on the street again.
Masrya being the laid back seemingly easy going girl she is, shows no ill effects and as always is taking the cage in her relaxed manner... sadly never knowing any different... but she is well in herself.
CITES Holland are at present in direct contact with CITES Egypt, Masrya has a new friend working alongside St.Leeuw pushing for Masrya's arrival in Holland. Masrya's plight has touched the Dutch officer dealing and she is working hard. Masrya's export license has errors that must be completed by CITES Egypt and her license re stamped... her Dutch import is expected to be granted around the next 10days.
At the end of October Egypt Air ceased operations to Amsterdam, this was not perceived as a problem as CITES informed all that Ostende where Egypt Air services, would be an agreed destination, we with the St.Leeuw team would travel to Ostende from Anna Paulowna to meet Masrya.. sadly after correspondence in pre planning Masrya's flight between ourselves, St.Leeuw and EA.. we received a nail in the coffin an email from Ostende stating due to veterinary restrictions Ostende only recieived Equine transport. Masrya's flight had been denied.. this sadly means we are now unable to fly with Egypt Air but we would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Egypt Air for all their efforts for Masrya.. a severe blow to us all.
We are now however after talking to the UK CITES Export dept now working with Zoologisitics NL, who are acting on Masrya's behalf opened talks with KLM the only airline capable of now bringing Masrya to Holland. Masrya fits all the criteria for big cat transport with KLM.. her plight putting an urgency on flying her out of Cairo. Masrya has become quite literally the darling of all concerned.
So we now announce the new members of team Masrya who we can not thank enough alongside St.Leeuw themselves, Zoologistics NL and once all confirmed KLM Airlines.

In what has seemingly been a never ending affair, the Egyptian CITES office has finally completed on basic requests from CITES Holland so finally her import papers to Holland can be issued.
Phew! what a couple of months this has been... this carry on if anything has highlighted the difference in attitudes within the CITES family.. where as would be expected the majority of countries offices work with uniform procedures and expectancy there are those that sadly do not and require outside pressure also to act in what others would class as the norm... working between these 2 offices has been best described as a frustrating learning curve... with one side asking for basic correspondence and the other showing a lack of importance to issues. The long and the short of all has meant that Masrya is still in the position she was when it was agreed Masrya could leave Egypt.
Thankfully due to delays not being the fault of any of Team Masrya an extension was granted of 1 month to the 31st January by the Egyptian Purchasing committee who initially agreed Masrya's transfer to Spots and Stripes and her export.
The Dutch CITES officer acknowledges the urgency of Masrya's move and in the next week it is expected the Dutch office will issue the import license so we can set about getting Masrya out of Cairo once and for all.
7 days notice is required by KLM and then Masrya will be on the 1st available flight out of Cairo to her new home ready and waiting for her at St.Leeuw.
Again we can not thank enough the teams at Zoologistics and KLM who are eagerly awaiting the day of Masrya's travel. The St. Leeuw team, have readied Masrya's enclosure and along with us eagerly await Masrya's arrival.. the dates of which have been expected and lost time and time again due to in large bureaucrats.

We cannot thank the Dutch team behind the scenes anymore if we tried... Esther at CITES Holland for all her support and effort to get Mas's import license pushed through in far less than average time.
And a huge huge thank you to Mark Verdoes at Zoologistics NL who has played a more than pivotal part within our team... and of course KLM Holland also, especially Raymond Tillburg who have more than stepped up to the plate for us..

En route to her new life!
Masrya's arrival at Landgoed Hoenderdaell, in Holland
February 15, 2013 - Text and pictures by Henk Gerber (NL)
Masrya has arrived at Lion Foundation. She is a real Lady, when the canvas of her transport cage was extracted, she sat like a real Lady to view everything. She was very quiet and nice to look at.
She was extracted from the crate that conveyed her without problems and they had to take about steps in another crate. She was driven to her new home and her stay she was before they entered for the stay of Nero (neighbor). She looked very good from what is that and Nero also found it kind of fun because he began to Meow. When she was put in the stay immediately and everywhere she went, she put a scent trail. Also she went and stood on her bed with straw to see if she can see her neighbor, who also stood there on his bed watching, but he's still too small.
I think they will make good contact quickly and that they together get a bright future. Tomorrow I try to make better pictures. Welcome to Masrya and go enjoy life. Her meal tonight is a Turkey.
Masrya's arrival in the Netherlands was even shown in the Dutch TV!

Spots & Stripes - February 18, 2013
We hope everyone has enjoyed following Masrya through her journey to her new life.. and you can all be assured Masrya will be popping up all over the place with updates from Robert Kruijff, Karel Geurts and the team at St.Leeuw, with footage and pictures courtesy of Henk Gerber.
We will also bring you news of other rescues coming into both St.Leeuw and Landgoerd Hoenderdaell... we hope you will embrace them all.
Anyone who has the fortune of visiting, please share your pics of your trips with us all. We will create an album for everyone to follow all...
While Masrya, in such a short period of time already enjoys her new life... Masrya is closer to 3 years old and does have multiple health issues, her weight should be approx 130 kg, she is a mere 87 kg.
Her hind legs are weak and she appeared bowed in the back because of the lack of space in the cage she was kept and a complete lack of space to exercise. This can be corrected given time now she is in a favorable environment and receiving excellent care. Also she appears to have dental issues, with some teeth missing due to mal care and nourishment.
Masrya sadly is lame in her right front paw, which is due to the fashion in which she was de-clawed, leaving permanent damage that can only be managed and not repaired. The declawing will also effect her more seriously both in her gait and the knock on effects to her joints as she gets older. Masrya will require care for life.
For Spots it is time to return our attentions to the world of conservation and the injustices our wildlife suffers. We hope everyone will support up and coming projects and continue to support ground level conservation.
We will continue to aid Dina Zulfikar in hers and others who value the welfare of wildlife’s quest for change…to change and enforce laws to protect wildlife from all abuse. We hope that Masrya’s story will serve as an aid for others to act and speak up for what is morally right for all animals in captivity.
