Donetsk Medical University, Ukraine
appaling living conditions and barbaric experiments
conducted on dogs and other animals
In July 2011, Alexei Sokolov informed the media about the appaling living conditions and the barbaric experiments conducted on dogs and other animals at the Medical University of Donetsk.
According to reports, the students of the Medical University at Donetsk have performed limb-amputations and educational surgeries on the internal organs of the animals WITHOUT prior anesthesia.
Each dog had to endure several surgeries before finally being discarded. Until death, these poor animals languished in horrible conditions suffering from distress and starvation.
Alexei Sokolov, the head of this vivarium couldn't watch the suffering of these innocent animals any longer and informed the media. He showed the vivarium to the journalists - articles have been published, HERE and HERE and these dogs have, since then, been given in the care of the Ukrainian animal activists.
Online translations of the above links HERE and HERE.
Thankfully, this vivarium had been closed and the animals given in the care of animal activists. But this vivarium is not an isolated case! There many others throughout the Ukraine where the conditions are not any better.
An unknown number of dogs and other animals are kept in similar vivarium and conditions in universities throughout the country and Ukraine's president, Viktor Ianoukovytch, ignores the petitions and pleas from his citizens and Ukrainian animal welfare organizations urging him to put an end to this outdated, barbaric experiments.
The animal activists in Ukraine are desperate!
Please help them by sharing these pictures and videos with as many as you can, including the international media.

Mr President,
among animal welfare organizations and activists, your country is known as one of the worst in Europe in regard to its treatment of animals. Since your administrations have proudly presented Ukraine's mobile crematorium used for the incineration of stray animals as part of your preparations for the European football championship in your national TV, the rest of the world knows it, too.
The images and videos taken in your State Medical University of Donetsk in July 2011, showing appalling living conditions of experimental animals such as dogs, rats and other animals, as well as the reports about the barbaric experiments - such as limb-amputation and educational surgeries on internal organs without prior anaesthesia - that had been conducted on these poor animals, have not only shocked us but left us disgusted and speechless about the fact that such horrific, monstrous experiments are being conducted in the 21st century in a country that considers itself as civilized and that is seeking an increasingly close relationship with the EU!

Even more appalling is the fact that this vivarium is not an isolated case. The conditions are not any better in other vivarium in your universities and laboratories throughout Ukraine where an unknown number of animals are suffering horribly at the hands of your scientists and students.
Mr President, we implore you to stop turning a blind eye to the suffering of these animals and to stop ignoring the petitions and letters of your citizens urging you to put an end to these outdated experiments.
Also - with all due respect - we believe it is your duty to help your country to align itself to the standards of the rest of Europe and the civilized world and to restore the image of Ukraine that has suffered so badly since the world became aware of these atrocities and which has inevitable repercussions on the economy of your country, and thus also on its citizens.
We trust that you will take the necessary measures to remedy to this situation. Until such a time, however, we regret that it will be necessary to boycott Ukraine both as a tourist and by way of commerce and we ask that all people of conscience and compassion participate in our boycott.
Sincerely,
